What I decide to do depends almost entirely on how important OBD2 scan tool updates are. All our cars are older then the software on it, so its basically updated for all our cars, but if updates are important and it cant be updated then I would prefer to sell it now and go with something else while it still has some value. It looks like I cant update this Cen-Tech scan tool, so I'm debating selling it, but if updates arent that important then maybe I'll just keep it. After trying to use Autels update software and trying updates for a few of their scanners that look similar to mine, I was not able to update the software on my scanner.
Autel is supposedly the company that either made the Cen-Tech scan tools or just made the software for them. However it looks like Harbor Freight doesnt carry Cen-Tech scan tools anymore, so it looks like they wont be providing any more updates for it. Part of the reason I paid up for a scan tool rather then just a code reader is because I thought the software would be updateable. A few years ago I got a relatively cheap Cen-Tech scan tool from Harbor Freight.
I do some of my own car repairs but nothing that requires more then basic tools. My needs for an OBD2 scanner/reader are limited, and honestly a basic code reader would probably be just fine for me.
